KATO AND HASHIMOTO LEAD DAY ONE OF OAKLEY PRO JUNIOR JAPAN
The Oakley Pro Junior commenced this morning at Shida Point in Ichimoiya, Chosei Japan. With a 3- to 4-foot swell and immaculate conditions on tap, ASP Japan Tour Manager Masao Ogawa made the call to run the first heats of the event.
From the outset, Japan’s Arashi Kato put on a blistering performance and took top honors by posting the highest wave and heat scores of the day with a 9-point ride and a 16.75 heat total. The day also bore witness to an upset in the form of Kan Watanabe, a surfer who held the prestige of being the junior series ratings leader going into the contest. Despite being a favorite at the event, Watanabe failed to find his footing today and bowed out of the contest.
Reika Noro, the defending women’s event champion also failed to advance from her first heat today. Where Noro faltered, Japan’s Ren Hashimoto stood tall and took command of the opening day by posting the highest heat total in the women’s division with an impressive 16.25.
First call tomorrow morning will be at 7 am and event organizers plan for a 7:30 start for final day. Action for the final day will resume with the quarter-finals match-ups for both the women and men.
