ROUND 1 OF OAKLEY ASP WORLD PRO JUNIOR AT CANGGU SIGNALS START OF OAKLEY ASP WJT
The Oakley ASP World Pro Junior is on, with round one of the Pro Junior women’s commencing in peaky 2-3ft waves at Canggu, Bali today.
The opening day of the US$95,000 Oakley ASP World Pro Junior has extra significance as the first event of the inaugural ASP World Junior Tour (WJT).
The field of 48 men and 18 women were started to day off with a traditional Balinese ceremony before competition got underway at 8am.
“We’ve got quite good contestable waves, a favorable tide, and the winds are looking good for the day,” said ASP Event Head Judge, Glen Elliott. “We’ll see what we get after the completion of the women’s and evaluate whether we put the men’s division in the water.” Ultimately, contest organizers decided to put the contest on stand by until tomorrow morning after running only the women’s first round, but not before the women’s field put on an impressive display of progressive surfing.
Defending ASP Women’s World Junior Champion, Laura Enever (AUS) had a shaky start, when she found herself trailing the USA’s Lakey Peterson and Japan’s Minato Takashi. But Enever’s experience saw her climb back into second ahead of Takashi, to advance to avoid the sudden death elimination, round two.
Also, surfing in fine form this morning was Oakley’s Sage Erikson (USA) who tied her round one heat with Alessa Quizon (HAW) with a solid two wave score of 12.10 to advance directly into the third round.
Joining Sage and Peterson as round one winners included Pauline Ado (FRA), Airini Mason (NZL), and Malia Manuel (HAW).
Contest organizers will reconvene at 6.30 a.m. tomorrow (October 3rd) at Canggu for the next call.
The Oakley ASP World Pro Junior will be webcast LIVE via www.oakleyprojunior.com.
