DAY 1 OF THE OAKLEY PRO JUNIOR BRAZIL LAUNCHES IN 4-6 FOOT SURF
Florianòpolis, Brazil, June 1, 2010 – Day one of the 2010 Oakley Pro Junior Brazil in Praia da Joaquina, Florianópolis was pounded with four-to-six foot waves and a strong current for the opening round of the event. 36 surfers launched the Brazilian under-20 title race today in sunny, but cold conditions as the 16 seeded athletes watched anxiously awaiting for their opponents to be declared.
This week will name the 2010 Brazilian under-20 champion, which has all the competitors pushing to perform to the best of their ability. However, all contenders face a force to be reckoned with in Miguel Pupo (SP) who has come to Florianopolis intent on becoming the 2010 Oakley Pro Junior Brazil Champion.
“The sea is very difficult today [with a] strong southwestern wind,” said competitor Ian Gouveia (PE). “It looks like a washing machine, [with lots of movement].” The challenging conditions however, did not stop Gouveia from winning his heat against Bruno Lopes (SC) and Luan Wood (SC). “It’s tricky to position yourself to find the waves,” adds Gouveia. “[You] have to be lucky under these conditions.”
As a first time competitor in the Oakley Pro Junior Brazil, Gouveia, 17, recognizes the high level of competition, but is confident in his ability to perform. “The Brazilian title fight will be tough. It is [my first time attending] the Oakley Pro Junior and [it] will be great. The event this year is here on Joaca where I feel at home. Hopefully the waves improve in the coming days.”
MAIN EVENT – The 16 top-rated surfers from the 2009 Oakley Pro Junior in Itajai (SC), who remain under 20 years of age, await the closing of Round 1 to determine their opponents in Praia da Joaquina. The main event will start with a Round of 48 on Wednesday, June 2, after the final four heats of the first round, which is scheduled to begin at 7:30 AM in Florianopolis, are completed.
